Smart Glasses & Eyewear Policy
To protect the integrity of OEBC examinations, OEBC prohibits the use of any eyewear that may enable recording, communication, display of information, or external assistance.
No smart or electronic eyewear is permitted, regardless of whether features are disabled, powered off, or claimed to be inactive, unless prior approval has been obtained under OEBC’s Accommodation Policy.
Prohibited Eyewear
The following are strictly prohibited during OEBC examinations:
Any eyewear that contains or supports electronic, digital, or communication functionality, including but not limited to:
- built-in cameras
- microphones and/or speakers
- Displays and/or projection systems
- wireless connectivity (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular)
- recording and/or streaming capabilities
- touch controls, buttons, sensors
- charging ports and/or power indicators
This includes commercially available smart glasses, AR glasses, or modified eyewear with embedded electronics.
Candidates must comply with all proctor instructions regarding eyewear inspection, including:
- holding eyewear close to the camera
- rotating eyewear to show all sides
- removing eyewear upon request
Proctors are authorized to:
- visually inspect eyewear via camera
- request removal of eyewear if smart functionality cannot be ruled out
- escalate concerns to a supervisor
Failure to comply may result in termination of the exam.
Candidates must comply with all exam staff instructions regarding eyewear inspection, including:
- Providing eyewear for a physical inspection
- Rotating eyewear to show all sides
- Removing eyewear upon request
Exam staff are authorized to:
- Visually inspect eyewear
- Request removal of eyewear if smart functionality cannot be ruled out
- Escalate concerns to a supervisor
Failure to comply will result in escalation to the Chief Examiner, who has the authority to terminate the attempt.
Candidates are responsible for ensuring that any eyewear worn during the exam complies with this policy. Claims of medical, vision, or convenience needs do not override security restrictions. Candidates may seek exceptions under OEBC’s Accommodations Policy.
Consequences of Violation
The provincial regulatory authorities are OEBC Members. Confirmed misconduct is reported to Members, who all have a “good character” requirement as part of registration.
If prohibited eyewear is identified:
- The candidate must immediately remove the eyewear or
- The exam may be paused, invalidated, or terminated
- The incident may be reported for further review under exam misconduct policies.
If prohibited eyewear is identified at on-site registration:
- The candidate must immediately remove the eyewear, which will remain with their personal belongings for the duration of the examination.
If prohibited eyewear is identified during the examination:
- The candidate must immediately remove the eyewear, continue the exam, and the exam staff will report the matter to the Chief Examiner.
- Upon completion of the exam, the Chief Examiner will determine if some or all stations are invalid.
- The Chief Examiner will report the incident to the CEO for further review, under exam misconduct policies.
